Compare Garmin Car GPS Vs Tom Tom

Is the Garmin car GPS the best model to buy? Or should you go with Tom Tom? Opinion seems divided between the two makers, even though Garmin out sells Tom Tom over 2 to 1.

To help you decide between the two, I'm going to compare the Garmin car GPS with Tom Tom. Hopefully, this will give you a little help on deciding which company and which of their models is right for you.

Garmin Car GPS

Garmin sells 50% of the GPS devices sold in the United States. (To be fair, in Europe Tom Tom is the industry leader.)

There's a reason for Garmin's dominance of the U. S. market. They simply have more models to choose from at more price points.

I'm not going to discuss every single Garmin model in this article. But I will mention a few that I like at various prices.

In the entry-level market, you have the Garmin nuvi 200 and the nuvi 350. The nuvi 200 is a true entry-level device. It can do everything a GPS is supposed to (tell you where you are and show you how to get to where you're going), but it doesn't have many features beyond that.

The nuvi 200 currently runs about $150.

The nuvi 350, on the other hand, has a few great features like maps of the whole United States and Canada. It also can receive traffic and weather alerts (with subscription). At only $200, that's a lot of GPS for the money!

In the middle of the market, Garmin has the incredible nuvi 760, which sells for just under $350. The 760 has a wider screen than either the nuvi 200 or the nuvi 350. It also has Bluetooth capability, traffic and weather alerts, and it can route it's sound through your car's stereo system. It also does multiple point routing, which means you can enter more than one destination in at a time.

Consumer Reports called the nuvi 760 the best overall GPS on the market, recently. I happen to agree.

At the high end of the market, there's the nuvi 880. It can do everything the nuvi 760 can and also has several impressive cutting-edge features that no one else has. The nuvi 880 will set you back a cool $900, but if you're looking for state-of-the-art, look no further!

Tom Tom

Tom Tom doesn't really compete with Garmin at the high end of the market. Actually, no one does.

Where Tom Tom is most competitive is the low end.

Their Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition can do much more than the nuvi 200, but sells for essentially the same! If I were going to buy and entry-level unit, I would probably spring for the One, 3rd Edition.

In the middle of the market there's the Tom Tom GO 920T, which sells for about the same as the nuvi 760 ($350). The GO 920T has Bluetooth and the wider screen. It also has Tom Tom's own Map Share technology, which let's users actually correct Tom Tom's map database.

Personally, I would go with the Garmin nuvi 760, if I wanted a middle range product.

So, my comparison ends up like this: Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition for $150, the Garmin nuvi 760 for around $350, and the Garmin nuvi 880 for $900.

There's certainly more to know about GPS devices than just this. For one, there's the company Magellan and their fine products.

But this at least will give you a start.

What you need to do now is get on an informative website where you can browse individual models and check out current prices.

GPS, which stands for geographical positioning system, is being used in numerous applications today, ranging from military, safety, outdoor sports and, of course, mapping. Increasingly, GPS is also used to track ships, trucks, cars, and now... dogs. The way a dog tracking system works is that the dog wears a special collar with a small GPS unit that continually keeps track of the dog's location. Every few seconds, the collar sends out a signal that displays the dog's location, direction and velocity on a special handheld receiver that looks like a small cell phone. If your dog is a roamer, a pet GPS is an absolutely invaluable tool to quickly find him again. No more anxiety as your dog will never be lost again.

While dog GPS systems are perhaps the most sophisticated electronics available to pet owners, modern technology can be helpful in other ways as well. For this, there's another interesting technological solution in a dog treadmill. Pet treadmills work pretty much the same as treadmills for humans, but they are designed specifically for dogs. Speed is adjustable, as is the incline. Once used to it, most dogs love the treadmill and get an excellent cardiovascular workout while having tons of fun.

Electronics have changed almost every part of our lives, and now they can help with pet training as well. In the case of a dog GPS, they can even help save your dog's life.

I bought this for my boyfriend for xmas last yr. This is great. Shame someone broke into his truck and stole it out of his console. I opened it and updated it, added pictures to it, and downloaded music to it. Also I had his cell phone blue toothed to it. Put it back in the box perfectly. It was ready to go xmas morning when he opened it.

When the cell phone rings in the truck or if he rec'd a message, the message went right onto the screen of the garmin. you have the option to hear the message or just read it. The phone calls went thru to the garmin also but half of the time it would be fuzzy guess due to the caller having a cell phone but it worked and it wasnt that bad. still could make out what the caller was saying.

This yr I bought him a Viper Alarm System from Amazon for xmas. Im def going to buy this garmin for him again. I compared alot of garmins and this one fit his needs.

Magellan 980795 Clip Case Review

If you are wondering what they mean by "clip case," they are talking about it having a clip like one you would find on a cell phone holster that you could hook onto a pocket. I ordered this item without being sure if they meant that or if it had some kind of loop that I could clip things onto (like a caribiner).

The case itself is fine, and my eXplorist 300 fits perfectly inside it. The padding is thin, but there is some. The clip on it is strong plastic attached to the case securely. You can still hook this onto a belt as the clip is quite large (about 2.5 inches long). For , if you're looking for a case, this one isn't bad, and I think it is more versatile than the belt loop case that Magellan offers.

Garmin nüvi 670 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

I just returned from a two week trip to Europe where I used the Nuvi 670 to drive through Belgium, Holland and Poland. It worked perfectly taking us from the country-sides of Belgium and Holland to our hotels in the narrow, one-way, unpronounceable streets of Brussels and Amsterdam. I can't imagine trying to do this with a map. Certainly, my wife and I wouldn't be on speaking terms if we had. Based on a lot of the reviews here, I am not sure that I would have bought one. I am never certain whether the Garmin units they bought were defective or whether the users are defective. I wouldn't hesitate, based on my own experience, to buy and use a Garmin device for travel in Europe.

My only criticisms of Garmin are that I think it is ridiculous that they don't offer free updates to BOTH the North American and European maps on the x70 units that come with dual maps. I also think Garmin GPS units have been overly "dumbed-down" since I bought my first Garmin several years ago. I used to be able to get elevation, the ability to pan out and see the entire route on one screen and many other features. Maybe you still can, but since they don't provide a detailed manual, who would know?

This product is great. It works just as well as any other GPS system I have seen. The only problem is when you turn it off when you are in one location and then you turn it on in another location, it can take awhile for it to recalculate your position. If you enter your destination before it recalculates, it will never end up recalculating until you cancel your route which can be frustrating especially if you just want to get on the road and not wait for a minute. Other than that, the AAA features are really cool. I used it extensively on my road trip across the US for restaurants and hotels. It also can tell you where all the normal restaurants, banks, and stores are. You can search for specific ones or just browse. Also, the visual and verbal commands are extremely easy to follow as well. Overall, I would definitely recommend.

We've been big fans of Magellan's Maestro line since it came out in early 2006. The Maestro interface is incredibly easy to use, even for those who are not completely comfortable with electronics. Garmin eTrex Venture HC GPS Receiver Review

I bought this because I had gotten lost hunting grouse on state property twice already this year. I figured, why ever get lost when I can have a gps unit for a little over 0.

Heres what I like:
it seems pretty tough, and its water proof (does not float though)
it picks up satelites quick
its icon based menus are easy to work with
it is accurate
As a hunter, it provides me with all I need
If you are savvy enough, you can get topo maps loaded for free
it is fully geocache ready (added fun)

what I dont like:
limited internal storage. 24 megs gives me just enough room for the maps of the areas I hunt in NY and western Ma.
no SD card support.(next time I will buy a unit that accepts external storage)

other than that, its good. If you are like me and on a budget, this unit will work out very well.

I bought my gps about a month ago. I haven't had any "big" problems and I'm actually amazingly
happy with how it functions. When you get it, be mindful that your map versions are going to be
about 3-4 editions out of date. But I used map-share to upload corrections and that is working
out just fine. I was a little hesitant because I was nervous it was a refurbished product, but
I'm really happy with the product and it wasn't a bad buy for the price. I would recommend this
gps to anyone who needs help with directions. Buy it, you'll love it. I do.
